Learning About the Sampang Flood, 1872–2020: Is the Film “Sampang Banjir Meloloh” More Effective Than the Book “Sejarah Banjir Sampang 1872–2020”?

Abstrak

This study compared the effectiveness of two local-history learning resources, the documentary film “Sampang Banjir Meloloh” and the book “Sejarah Banjir Sampang 1872–2020”, in improving students’ understanding of the history of flooding in Sampang. The study employed a quantitative quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design. The participants were students in Grade 10 at SMAN 1 Sampang, with Class X Merdeka 6 serving as the experimental group and Class X Merdeka 7 as the control group. Data were collected through 25-item pretests and posttests and analyzed using paired-samples and independent-samples t tests after normality and homogeneity assumptions were examined. Both groups showed significant improvement. The mean score increased from 47.89 to 73.66 in the film group and from 50.00 to 81.41 in the book group. The gain scores were 25.77 and 31.41, respectively. The independent-samples t test also indicated a significant difference between the groups, t(67) = −3.617, p = .001. Thus, although both resources positively supported students’ local historical understanding, the book produced higher posttest and gain scores than the film.
