The Mardirahayu Monument as A Local History Learning Resource in East Lampung

Abstrak

History is not merely knowledge of past events but also a means of developing historical awareness, identity, and social values. In history education, local history is important because it enables students to connect experiences in their immediate environment with broader national historical developments. This study aims to describe the history of the Mardirahayu Monument in Gantimulyo Village, Pekalongan District, East Lampung Regency, and examine its potential as a local history learning resource. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method using observation, interviews, and document analysis. Informants were selected through snowball and chain sampling, while data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the Mardirahayu Monument commemorates a battle between Indonesian fighters and Dutch forces during the Second Dutch Military Aggression in 1949. The battle resulted in the deaths of several fighters and led to the construction of the monument as a memorial. The monument has substantial potential as a local history learning resource through Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL), field trips, process-skills approaches, and assignment-based learning. It can also support community history education through commemorative activities. Thus, the Mardirahayu Monument can connect local and national history while fostering historical thinking, historical awareness, and patriotism.
