From Darkness To Light: Toward Educational Equality in Contemporary Indonesia

Abstrak

Education is a fundamental instrument for developing human capacity and building a more equitable society. In Indonesia, however, unequal educational access, socioeconomic disparities, limited facilities, and gender-related stereotypes continue to challenge educational equality. This article examines Raden Adjeng Kartini’s ideas about women’s education and their relevance to contemporary Indonesian education. Using a library research approach, the study analyzes Kartini’s letters compiled in Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang and relevant scholarly literature on women’s education and the history of Indonesian education. The analysis focuses on the historical conditions that shaped Kartini’s educational thought, her conception of education as a means of intellectual and moral development, her advocacy of equal educational opportunities for women, and the contemporary implications of these ideas. The findings indicate that Kartini regarded education not merely as the acquisition of knowledge but as a means of cultivating independent thought, character, dignity, and social participation. Although access to education has expanded substantially, significant geographic, economic, infrastructural, and digital inequalities remain. Kartini’s educational philosophy therefore remains relevant as a moral and philosophical foundation for developing an inclusive, equitable, and socially responsive Indonesian education system.
